Welcome to Chapter 1! Let's explore the world of numbers together. We will learn to count, write, and even guess how many things there are!
Main skills from this lesson
NUMBERS 1-9
Let us count and read aloud the numbers 1 to 9.
Which number shows the helicopters ()?
THE CONCEPT OF ZERO
Look at the picture. Ansari has 1 balloon. His balloon flies away. Now, he has 'no balloons'. Ansari has zero balloons.
We use 0 (zero) to show nothing!
| Tens | Ones |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 |
The numbers after 9 are made of more than 1 digit. So, after 9, a new place is added, called the 'tens' place.
9 flowers and 1 more flower make how many flowers?
Let us learn numbers from 11 to 20.
How many TENS and ONES are in the number 13?
Let us continue counting to 20.
How many TENS are in the number 20?
What number comes after 15?
3. Count the objects and write the number and name.
| Number | Tens & Ones | Name |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 1 ten 2 ones | Twelve |
| 18 | 1 ten 8 ones | Eighteen |
| 10 | 1 ten 0 ones | Ten |
| 17 | 1 ten 7 ones | Seventeen |
| 15 | 1 ten 5 ones | Fifteen |
4. Complete the table.
Think about how many tens and ones are in each number!
Which number name is correct for 18?
Look at the train! The bogies are in order. Let's see who is sitting where:
Note: Ordinal numbers tell us the position of something in a list!
If you are 'First' in line, what is your ordinal number?
Get Busy: The Colors of the Rainbow
Look at the beautiful rainbow! The colors appear in a special order from top to bottom.
™º™™¢™
Science Fact: A rainbow appears in the sky after a shower of rain!
Which color is the FIFTH (5th) color of the rainbow?
Look at the blue rods (tens) and red blocks (ones). Fill in the blanks.
Remember: One blue rod is a group of 10 blocks!
If you see 5 blue rods and 4 red blocks, what is the number?
Read aloud and complete the table.
10 tens make one hundred.
| Number | English Name | Dhivehi Name |
|---|---|---|
| 31 | Thirty one | ¡ ¡ |
| 42 | Forty two | ¦ ¹¡ |
| 53 | Fifty three | |
| 64 | Sixty four | |
| 75 | Seventy five | |
| 86 | Eighty six | ¡˜ |
| 97 | Ninety seven | šË†¹ |
| 100 | One hundred |
What is the Dhivehi name for 100?
7. Write names in English and Dhivehi.
8. Write the missing Dhivehi names.
9. Read the abacus.
| Number | English | ¹Ë† (Dhivehi) |
|---|---|---|
| 26 | Twenty six | ¡ž |
| 33 | Thirty three | |
| 48 | Forty eight | ¦ ¡¡ |
| 29 | Twenty nine | šË†Ë† |
| 35 | Thirty five |
An abacus has 4 beads on Tens and 2 beads on Ones. What is the number?
Now we go higher! 50, 51, 52...
What is 5 tens and 5 ones?
60... 70... 80!
Which number comes after 79?
10. Identify the mistake on the left abacus and show the correct number.
Get Busy: Help your friend find out the total number of chocolates for the class!
If you have 25 classmates, how many chocolates do you need?
To compare numbers, look at the tens first. If tens are equal, look at the ones.
Compare 46 and 29:
4 tens is more than 2 tens, so 46 is greater than 29! Also, remember that all 2-digit numbers are greater than all 1-digit numbers.
Which number is greater: 46 (4 tens) OR 29 (2 tens)?
3. Compare the quantities. Think of stick bundles as tens!
A boy has 2 bundles and 1 stick. A girl has 1 bundle and 9 sticks. Who has more?
4. Count the dots and find the greater number.
5. Circle the greater number in each set.
| Left Side | Right Side | Greater? |
|---|---|---|
| 52 (5 Tens, 2 Ones) | 44 (4 Tens, 4 Ones) | 52 |
| 84 (8 Tens, 4 Ones) | 86 (8 Tens, 6 Ones) | 86 |
| 74 (7 Tens, 4 Ones) | 91 (9 Tens, 1 One) | 91 |
Which is greater: 8 tens and 4 ones (84) OR 8 tens and 6 ones (86)?
6. Arrange in ascending order (Smallest to Greatest).
7. Arrange Dhivehi names in order.
8. Arrange in descending order (Greatest to Smallest).
Stairs: Ascending (UP) | Descending (DOWN)
Which list is in DESCENDING order (Greatest to Smallest)?
9. Use the digits to form the smallest and greatest numbers.
10. Is the sentence correct (✅) or incorrect ()?
| Digits | Smaller 2-digit | Greater 2-digit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 7 | 17 | 71 |
| 4 and 8 | 48 | 84 |
| 2 and 6 | 26 | 62 |
| 5 and 9 | 59 | 95 |
Hint: While forming 2-digit numbers, do not write 0 at the tens place!
Using digits 5 and 9, what is the GREATEST 2-digit number you can make?
Get Busy: Estimation!
Guess how many items are in your room.
Patterns: Look at Shuaib's garden design. When things repeat in an order, they make a pattern.
| Item | Less than 10 | 10 to 20 | More than 20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desks | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| Fans | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| Pencils | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| Windows | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
Estimation is guessing a number that is close to the correct answer!
If you have a pattern:,,,, what comes next?
Get Busy: Sound Pattern!
Clap, clap, tap... Clap, clap, tap...
Froggy Hop: Help the frog reach home by hopping on every 2nd stone!
Flower Path: Skip count by 2s up to 20.
This is called skip counting in twos (2s).
If a frog is on 10 and hops 2 stones forward, where will he land?
Our frog is on 10. He is very strong and can hop 10 steps at a time!
Help him find the path by jumping in 10s.
This is skip counting in tens (10s)!
If the frog is on 20 and hops 10 steps, where will he land?
1. Fill in the empty blocks for Ali.
2. What comes next in each pattern?
What is the next number: 5, 10, 15, 20...?
4. Faiz counts in 2s: 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17. Is he right?
5. Find the ODD ONE in each pattern!
Which number is the ODD ONE in this sequence: 10, 12, 13, 14?
6. Continue the patterns.
Vocabulary List: These are the important words you learned in Unit 1!

Where do you land if you start at 6 and jump 4 times?
Adding a single number to 10 is easy!
10 + 4 = 14
What is 10 + 7?
UNIT 3: SUBTRACTION UP TO 20
Subtraction means taking away to find how many are LEFT.
I had 5 balloons, but 2 popped! Now I have 3.
()() =
5 - 2 =?
We use the - sign for subtraction.
8 - 3 = 5 means if you take 3 from 8, you have 5 left.
Which sign is for taking away?
To subtract, we count backwards on the number line!
