When we share something fairly, each person gets an Equal Part.

Fraction Rule: A part is only a fraction if all parts are EQUAL!
If you cut a cake into 2 pieces and one is BIGGER, is it equal?
Meet the Fractions!
= 1/2 (One Half) = 1/4 (One Quarter)
Get Busy: Fold a sheet of paper once for a half, and twice for a quarter. What do you see?
How many quarters do you need to make one whole?
Are They Equal?
To be a fraction, the parts MUST be the same size.
Detective Tip: Use your eyes to check if one piece looks bigger than the other!
Aisha has 4 equal triangles. Ali has 4 uneven slices. Who has Quarters?
How Much is Shaded?
Look at the colored parts of each shape. Is it a half or a quarter?
Shading Rule: If you shade MORE than 1 part of 4, you have shaded MORE than a quarter!
Look at the Star (Shape C). What fraction is colored?
Fractions on the Line!
Fractions can also show where something is on a number line.
0 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 --|-- 6 5 1/2
Line Tip: A half jump always lands you right in the middle of two whole numbers!
If you take 3 whole jumps and 1 half jump, where do you land?
Splitting Collections!
Fractions aren't just for shapes. You can find half of a group of things too!

Sharing Tip: Finding half of a group is like sharing it fairly between two friends!
If you have 12 butterflies and give half to a friend, how many do you give?
Don't Get Tricked!
Aiman thinks 1/4 is bigger than 1/2 because 4 is bigger than 2. Is he right?
No! When you cut a cake into 4 pieces, the pieces are smaller than if you only cut it into 2 pieces.
The Rule: The BIGGER the bottom number, the SMALLER the piece!
If you have a chocolate bar, would you get a bigger piece if you share it between 2 people or 4 people?
